Why We Love Exercise Before Bed (And You Should, Too!)

Yes, you read it right, we love exercise before bed! Puns aside, exercise before bed could potentially help to improve your sleep quality, if you’re a night owl! Contrary to common belief, not everyone will suffer from sleep disturbances when they exercise before bed, according to the National Sleep Foundation. Conversely, it may produce a better quality sleep for some. Similarly, if you were to exercise during the day, it will also improve your sleep quality. Studies have shown that exercising, no matter which time of the day, will help you sleep better. So, if you are a nyctophile, just like me, go ahead and enjoy your workout under the stars.

Other reasons to love to exercise before bed

  1. No sun exposure
    Exercising at night means no sun casting over us. This prevents sunburn, heat rash and also long-term cancer risks of sun exposure. According to associate professor of dermatology, Adam Friedman, exercising in a hot environment could cause the development of wrinkles and fine lines. 
  2. Less crowds at the gym
    Have you entered a gym in the morning and discovered that the only machine available is one that is under maintenance? This is unlikely to happen during the night. You are free to roam around the gym and use the machine as long as you like without feeling guilty about hogging it. 
  3. More sociable
    Understandably, the morning gym goers may not be as gregarious because they are mostly rushing to go to work or make it to a meeting. However, you will probably get to meet a friendlier bunch in the evening/ night. If you’re new in town, this would be a great opportunity for you to make some new friends. Also, you don’t have to sacrifice your lunch hour to go to the gym. You could spend the time going for lunches with your colleagues to bond with them. 
  4. Experience the night breeze
    There is no reason for night owls to not have an outdoor exercise session. Running at night can be calming for some people as there is less people and traffic too. However, please remain vigilant and aware of your surroundings at all times. It would be best to carry a cell phone as well so that you are able to be call for help if anything unfortunate were to happen. 
  5. Enjoy longer beauty sleep
    There is no need to set the alarm an hour earlier just to fit in an exercise routine. You could simply do it after work and before going to bed. This means more time for shut-eye or longer dressing up time! So go ahead and enjoy more time grooming yourself and look good for work.
