Kacang Pool For Under 10 Dollars

Eating healthy on a tight budget? This can be very difficult, however, fret not as I have created a nutritious yet ridiculously cheap Kacang Pool meal. For under $10, you are able to make 4 meals! Kacang is derived from a Malay word which means beans. Traditionally, minced beef and curry powder are added to the meal, however, omitting them doesn’t compromise the flavour. It cuts the cost of making it as well as the calories.

The beans that are used in this recipe are broad beans. Broad beans or fava beans are a type of plant-based protein that is packed with nutrients. They are high in Manganese, a nutrient that has many functions. One of it is that it works with calcium to keep our bones strong and hence could help prevent osteoporosis. These beans are also high in fibre. The daily dietary fibre intake recommended by Health Promotion Board is 26g for male and 20.4g for women. This means, by just having a serving of this meal, you’re already meeting about 1/2 of your daily fibre requirement. Furthermore, they are a good source of Iron. This is good news for our vegetarian friends. A cup of fava beans provides us with 14% of our iron needs!

All in all, this meal is packed with nutrients that help to nourish our body. But most importantly, it tastes amazing!

Kacang Pool

Serves: 4                 Time: 20 mins

Ingredients :

  •  1 can foul medames (wash and drain)
  • A pinch of salt & pepper
  • 4 fresh green chillies (sliced)
  • 1 medium red onion (diced)
  • 4 eggs (sunny-side up)
  • 2 limes (halved)
  • 8 slices of multigrain country loaf 

Preparation :

  1. Drained the foul medames and wash it
  2. Blend the foul medames till its texture is a little chunky
  3. Pour the blended foul medames into a non-stick pot and let it boil
  4. Add salt & pepper to taste
  5. Pour the mixture into 4 equal bowls and topped it up with onions and chillies
  6. Serve each bowl with an egg and 2 slices of bread
